Employers Added 217,000 Jobs in May, Exceeding Economists' Expectations

on .

Businesses in the U.S. added more jobs than projected in May, a hopeful sign for Americans out looking for work. Payrolls increased by 217,000 in May after a 282,000 figure in April that was revised down from the originally reported figure. The jobless rate was unchanged at 6.3 percent from the month before, figures from the Labor Department showed Friday.

The consensus of economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for a median reading of 215,000 payrolls last month and a slight increase in the unemployment rate to 6.4 percent.

Further job gains could help speed up household spending, which comprises more than two-thirds of the world’s largest economy. This would be encouraging news for the U.S. gross domestic product, which shrank last quarter for the first time in three years.
